The Oglethorpe women's basketball team suffered a comprehensive loss to No. 24 Rhodes Sunday afternoon in Dorough Field House, falling 80-54.
The Stormy Petrels got solid performances from sophomore forward Alana Bentley, who scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and freshman guard Ciara Hughes, who scored 12 points on 6-of-15 shooting and added two assists. However, the Petrels shot just 37 percent to Rhodes' 46 percent for the game. The Petrels also shot 21 percent from three-point range and 57 percent from the free-throw line to Rhodes' 79 percent.
Additionally, Rhodes standout Lauren Avant, the SAA's leading scorer, scored 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds.
After Oglethorpe took an early 2-0 lead, their only advantage of the game, the visiting Lynx proceeded to go on a 19-3 run to take a 19-5 lead with 12:30 left in the first half. Then, they followed that up with a 16-3 run to end the half, taking a 46-19 lead into the halftime break.
At the start of the second half, Rhodes extended that run to 22-6 and took a 31-point lead, 52-21, with 17:31 remaining. Rhodes' largest lead would be 32 points, 59-27 with 15:12 remaining, and they would cruise to the victory from there.
Rhodes outrebounded the Petrels 45-34 in the end. They also accrued 17 assists and just 11 turnovers to Oglethorpe's 11 assists and 18 turnovers.
The Petrels drop to 4-19 on the season, 2-10 in SAA play, with the loss. They retain a seventh-place tie in the league, and now go on to the final weekend of regular season play, which features a road trip to Birmingham-Southern Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern and Millsaps Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.
