FOREST GROVE – Lewis & Clark put together a blistering surge to open the second half Saturday, providing the cushion needed for the Pioneers to roll to a 66-57 victory over Pacific in Northwest Conference women's basketball action at the Stoller Center.
The Boxers were within one at halftime, 28-27, but the Pioneers went on a 16-4 run over the first seven minutes of the second half to build a 13-point advantage. Lewis & Clark eventually built as much as a 16-point advantage before the Boxers reduced the lead to just nine points at the end of the game.
Olivia Cook (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) led three Pacific players to score in double figures, finishing with 18 points. Sarah Curl (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Alex Pfefferle (Sr., Twin Falls, Idaho) each put in 10 points. Pacific finished the night shooting 36.5 percent from the field (23-63), 31.3 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line with just eight attempts.
Sarah Anderson came off the bench to lead Lewis & Clark with 21 points, all of which came on seven three-pointers. Katie Anderson added 17 points. Ayisat Afolabi scored 11 and Reese DeHart netted 10. Lewis & Clark shot 42.6 percent from the field (23-54), 38.1 percent from three-point range and just 50 percent from the free throw line.
Pacific dropped to 7-15, 3-11 NWC with the loss. Lewis & Clark improved to 12-10, 7-6 NWC.
Lewis & Clark jumped out to their first double-digit lead midway through the first half as Sarah Anderson's three-pointer at the 10:41 mark opened up a 15-5 advantage. The lead was 19-10 with 6:01 left when Olivia Mayorga-Overtone (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) hit a lay-in that sparked an 11-2 run. Mayorga-Overtone capped the run with a three-pointer with 2:59 to go, tying things are 21-21.
Abby Jones (Jr., Haines, Alaska) connected on a jumper with 1:28 left to give Pacific a three-point lead, but Sarah Anderson hit two late three-pointers that gave the Pioneers the 28-27 halftime lead.
Katie Anderson provided much of the catalyst behind L&C's opening second half run, scoring the first five points of the period to put the Pioneers up six at the 16:32 mark. Sarah Anderson's three-pointer a minute later opened up a 41-29 lead and Afolabi's lay-in with 12:59 left provided for a 44-31 advantage. Pacific scored the next four points to cut the deficit to 44-35, but the Pioneers went on 10-3 run from there to build their biggest lead of the game 54-38, with 5:38 to go.
Pacific will conclude the 2013-14 season next weekend. The Boxers will celebrate Spirit Night and Senior Night on Friday as they host Linfield. The season ends on the road at Puget Sound on Saturday. Tipoff is 6 p.m. both nights. Live webcasts of both games will be available at GoBoxers.com.
