Millikin Women Win Thriller

          The Millikin women's basketball team scored a thrilling 73-72 win over North Park University on Feb. 15 at the Griswold Center in Decatur, Ill.

          Millikin's Kelsey Going made a free throw with two seconds left in the game to lift the Big Blue to victory.

          The game was a tight one throughout with the contest tied at 28-28 at the half.

Millikin led most of the second half pushing their lead out to as many as 12 points at one point before the Vikings started their comeback.  North Park tied the game at 72-72 with 20 seconds left on two free throws by Brittany Pittas.  As Millikin was going for the final shot, Going was fouled after catching an inbounds pass setting the stage for the Big Blue victory.  Going missed the first free throw, but made the second.  Holly Haskins secured the victory making a steal on North Park's inbound pass after the made free throw.

          Millikin shot 40 percent from the field while North Park hit on 46 percent.  Millikin had the advantage at the free throw line where the Big Blue hit 22-27 (81.5 percent) including hitting their first 15 straight free throw opportunities.  North Park was 14-18 (78 percent) from the line.  Millikin had the edge in the rebounding battle 36-30.

          Millikin had four players score in double figures including all three seniors who were honored before the game for their contributions to Big Blue basketball.  Brittany Czaplicki led the way with 15 points and a team high eight rebounds.  Czaplicki had four assists and three steals.  Jasmine Johnson had 14 points along with freshman Yip Ypya.  Senior Bria Williams had 12 points and four steals.

          North Park's top scorer was Liz Rehberger with 15 points.

          Millikin improves to 10-13, 4-8 while North Park goes to 11-11, 4-7.  Millikin joins North Park and North Central with four wins in conference play and trails fourth place Elmhurst by one game.  The Bluejays earned their fifth conference win by defeating Augustana on Saturday night.  The teams are battling for a fourth place finish and the final spot in the CCIW postseason tournament.  Millikin will host Elmhurst in a makeup game on Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.
