Herons clinch playoff spot with 67-57 win over Clarkson

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team put three players in double digits and clinched a spot in the Liberty League Tournament with a 67-57 victory over Clarkson University in Bristol Gym tonight. Heron junior forward Chloe Hayter led the way with game-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds.
 
Hayter was 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the line. Senior guard Erin O'Brien added 16 points, five rebounds and five assists and senior guard Jacqueline Murphychipped in 12 points, matched Hayter's nine boards, and recorded three steals. William Smith (18-5, 11-3) shot 35 percent from the floor, made five 3-pointers, and sank 22-of-26 (.846) at the line.
 
Clarkson (8-12, 3-9) also had three players reach double digits. Sophomore forward Ashley Loggins had a team-high 15 points, five rebounds, and four steals. First-year forward Alyssia Marsal contributed 12 points and five boards off the bench and junior guard Cara Manfredi had 10 points and five rebounds. The Golden Knights shot 42 percent from the floor, went 2-of-9 from beyond the arc, and sank 15-of-26 at the free throw line.
 
William Smith broke the game open with a 22-3 run early in the game, sinking all four of their first half 3-pointers during the run. The Herons lead by as many as 17 in the first half and took a 34-23 lead into halftime. Junior forward Chloe Hayter led all scorers with 12 points at the break. The Herons shot 35 percent from the floor and got to the free throw line 15 times (making 12).
 
The Herons maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 19. The Golden Knights were able to mount a late run, closing the margin to 10 twice in the final minute.
 
William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the Herons host St. Lawrence (14-7, 10-2). William Smith is one game in the loss column behind the Saints and Vassar, which are tied for first in the conference. Clarkson will travel to RIT tomorrow for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
