NAC RELEASE

Castleton has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the North Atlantic Conference women's basketball title in a vote conducted by the league's coaches. The Spartans, who received seven first-place votes, return ten players and two starters from last year's team which finished runner-up to Colby-Sawyer.

Castleton went on to win the ECAC New England Championship after falling to the Chargers in the conference championship, wrapping up a historic season which saw the Spartans win a program-record 29 games. All-Conference First Team selections Alyssa Leonard and Meghan O'Sullivan lead the Spartan returners, coming off a 2012-13 season in which they both ranked in the top-ten in field goal percentage. The defensive-minded Spartans have led the league in opponents' points per game in each of the last six seasons, but will need to replace three-time NAC Defensive Player of the Year Kelly Conway, who was among three-starters lost from last year's team.

Defending champion Colby-Sawyer received the other three first place votes and finished second in the poll. Led by 2013 Coach of the Year George Martin, the Chargers return ten players and two starters for the upcoming season. Ashley Fruzetti, Kelsey Cahill, and Kelsey Bragdon all played significant roles in last year's title run, but the Chargers will need to replace roughly 50% of their scoring lost to graduation. Included in that scoring bulk are two-time NAC Player of the Year Taylor DeSanty, and two-time all-conference honoree Cailin Bullett.

Husson and New England College tied for third, while Maine Maritime rounded out the top-five.

Nine of the ten conference teams will kick-off their seasons this weekend, with conference play scheduled to begin on December 3.
