Kings Point, NY – The USMMA women's basketball team was limited to 23.1 percent shooting Monday night in a 60-37 loss to rival Coast Guard.  Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) paced the Mariners with 14 points and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line.  The Bears made 6-of-29 from three-point range but forced the home side into 24 total turnovers while registering 10 blocks.

Coast Guard (16-5) put together a 10-0 spurt in the first half to build a 17-7 advantage at the 7:31 mark.  During that stretch, USMMA went without a point for 6:41 of action.  Kristina Walz (Manona, IA) ended the drought with a layup inside but the Mariners trailed 28-13 at halftime.

Merchant Marine (4-16) got a long jumper from Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) to start the second period with an assist from Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA).  However, the visitors lead grew to 46-22 on a long jump shot from Torie Sutherland.  The Bears had three players score in double figures, including a team high 13 points from Meghan Fornaro.

Walz and Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) closed the night with a team high seven rebounds for UMMA, who finished with a 49-45 advantage on the glass.  Hofmann and VanDerWal both had three assists each while 11 different Mariners saw action.  Coast Guard cruised down the stretch and picked up the 60-37 road triumph.

Merchant Marine returns to action Wednesday night for a Landmark Conference contest at home against Moravian.
