Kings Point, NY – The USMMA women's basketball team was limited to 23.1 percent shooting Monday night in a 60-37 loss to rival Coast Guard. Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, IL) paced the Mariners with 14 points and was 7-of-8 at the free throw line. The Bears made 6-of-29 from three-point range but forced the home side into 24 total turnovers while registering 10 blocks.
Coast Guard (16-5) put together a 10-0 spurt in the first half to build a 17-7 advantage at the 7:31 mark. During that stretch, USMMA went without a point for 6:41 of action. Kristina Walz (Manona, IA) ended the drought with a layup inside but the Mariners trailed 28-13 at halftime.
Merchant Marine (4-16) got a long jumper from Rebecca Resor (Bay St. Louis, MS) to start the second period with an assist from Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, IA). However, the visitors lead grew to 46-22 on a long jump shot from Torie Sutherland. The Bears had three players score in double figures, including a team high 13 points from Meghan Fornaro.
Walz and Alexandra Winfree (Millstone, NJ) closed the night with a team high seven rebounds for UMMA, who finished with a 49-45 advantage on the glass. Hofmann and VanDerWal both had three assists each while 11 different Mariners saw action. Coast Guard cruised down the stretch and picked up the 60-37 road triumph.
Merchant Marine returns to action Wednesday night for a Landmark Conference contest at home against Moravian.
