Freshmen Pace Cyclones In Victory Over Baptist Bible

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four freshmen combined to score 47 points, helping the Centenary College women's basketball team defeat Baptist Bible 63-34 at Huckaby Gymnasium Monday night.
 
Forward Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J./Belvidere)Melissa Rabe (Byram, N.J./Lenape Valley) and Jessie Sharr (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) all netted 10 points.
 
Centenary (9-13, 7-6 CSAC) scored nine-straight points to open the game, aided by four from George. Sophomore guard Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) capped the run with a three-pointer at the 15:15 mark.
 
Alyssa Cole's jumper pulled BBC within four three minutes later, but Rabe started an 11-0 spurt with a bucket of her own on the Cyclones' next possession.
 
The Cyclones would build a lead as large as 17 on three occasions during the first half and went into the locker rooms in front 33-16 after Sharr buried a triple just before the buzzer.
 
Carissa Erdman's basket cut Centenary's lead to just 10 with 14:12 to play; however, the Cyclones held the Defenders scoreless over the next 6:31 to retake control of the contest. CC netted 12-straight points, with the final five being contributed by George.
 
George pulled down four rebounds, while Sharr tallied four assists and three rebounds.
 
Centenary connected on 44 percent (24-54) of its shots from the field and collected 16 steals. Barofski recorded a game-best four thefts, while Rabe and junior Kim Osieja (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) both added three. Rabe and Osieja also grabbed five rebounds each.
 
Baptist Bible was limited to 29 percent shooting (12-41) and marred by 27 turnovers. Megan Wagner came off the bench to score a team-high eight points for the Defenders.
 
Centenary travels to Cedar Crest Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
