New York, NY --- A 10-0 run to start the second half helped to propel the Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team to a 60-53 win over the Hawks of Hunter College on Friday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match up.
With the win, BC improves to 16-6 overall on the season and 9-4 in the CUNYAC; while the Hawks drop to 10-12 overall on the year and 7-6 in conference play.
The win also gives the Bulldogs the season sweep over the Hawks, as Brooklyn defeated Hunter, 61-55, back on January 15th at the West Quad Center.
Leading the way for BC was senior Megan Campbell, who led all scorers with 19 points, to go along with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior Nicole Francomano added 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while senior Zoe Randolph chipped in with 10 points. Junior Asia Foster contributed with five points and six rebounds.
Hunter was led by Nicole Lenard's 18 points and eight assists. Ayanna Hudson pulled down nine rebounds, while Kristen Markoe finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
The first half saw four lead changes as the teams exchanged baskets early on. After a layup from Nacirema Mann that gave the visitors their second lead of the game, 8-7 (14:01); the home team answered with a three from Kristen Sells to put the Hawks ahead 10-8 (13:28). The three-pointer from Sells would begin a 10-0 run that gave Hunter a nine-point lead, 17-8, near the midway part of the first half.
The Hawks would lead by as many as 10, 26-16, following a three from Racquel Baudanza and would eventually take a seven-point, 30-23, halftime lead.
Brooklyn would come out of the locker room determined to get back into the game, as the Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to regain the lead, 33-30, with 17:07 left in the game. Junior Sarah Shanderson began the run with a three-pointer, while Foster, Randolph and Francomano also provided scoring.
Hudson's free throw at the 15:28 mark would eventually end Hunter's second half scoring drought.
Another Sells three-pointer would cut Hunter's deficit to one, 35-34, at the 14:14 mark; however, that's as close as the home team would get the rest of the way, as Brooklyn answered with five straight points, highlighted by a three from junior Jaclyn Grasso to put the visitors ahead, 40-34 (11:39).
The Bulldogs would keep the Hawks at bay the rest of the way as Campbell and Francomano hit key free throws down the stretch to close out the game, 60-53. Brooklyn outscored Hunter 37-23 in the second half to complete the comeback.
For the game, Brooklyn shot 37.0% (20-for-54) from the field, including 27.8% (5-for-18) from three. The Bulldogs also shot 65.2% (15-for-23) from the charity stripe.
Hunter shot 34.4% (21-for-61) from the field, including 37.5% (6-for-16) from the beyond the arc. The Hawks went to the line just seven times, hitting five attempts (71.4%).
The Bulldogs also won the battle of the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks by a margin of 42-37.
