Freshman Bailey Grayvold (Norway, Mich.) scored 16 points, including six points in a decisive run during the final three minutes, as the Lakeland College women's basketball team earned a 62-50 win over Concordia University Chicago in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference season opener.
Grayvold's three-point play with 2:43 to play started a 14-4 run to close the game and help the Muskies even their overall record at 2-2 this season. Lakeland also defeated Concordia for the first time in four years and dropped to Cougars to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the NACC.
The Muskies got excellent individual performances from both Grayvold and Taylor Jandrin (Sr.-Forestville, Wis.) in holding on for a win after a second half rally by Concordia.
Grayvold led the Muskies with her 16 points as well as six steals and four assists, and also added seven rebounds while showing poise down the stretch. In addition to several big baskets, she also added two rebounds and a steal late as Lakeland took control in the final minutes.
Jandrin also finished with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds off the bench, including nine rebounds in the second half. She helped the Muskies to a 50-41 rebounding advantage, and also scored seven points in the middle of the second half to help Lakeland fight off the Cougars.
Lakeland led 28-18 at halftime, holding Concordia to 25.9% shooting (7 of 27) in the first 20 minutes. The Cougars came out strong in the second half, though, and took a 35-34 lead with 11:24 to play after a jumper by Jessica Genke.
Jandrin scored on a layup to give the Muskies the lead back, and the teams swapped the lead back until Leah Eisner (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) scored inside for a 38-37 advantage. Lakeland would never trail again and pushed the lead to 45-38 after a three-pointer by Jandrin with 4:42 to play
The Cougars got back within two points at 45-43 and again at 48-46. But while the Muskies shot just 33.8% from the field (22 of 65) for the game, they picked it up when it counted. Over the final four minutes and starting with a three-pointer by Lexie Greenheck (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) to make it 48-43, Lakeland scored on eight of its final nine offensive possessions.
Kayla Clark (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) added 10 points, including eight in the first half as the Muskies led by as many as 13 points.
Genke led Concordia with 19 points, including 16 in the second half, but was just 7 of 19 from the field and committed eight turnovers. The Cougars shot 30.4% for the game (17 of 56), including 9 of 17 from the line.
Lakeland is home again Wednesday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
