Muskies chilly from the field again in loss to Alverno

More news about: Lakeland

Devon Gorman scored 29 points for Alverno College and the Lakeland College women's basketball team couldn't get untracked offensively in a 70-51 loss Wednesday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies shot just 30.0% from the field (18 of 60) and hit just three of 21 three-point tries, trailing for all but the opening minutes and dropping to 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Alverno improved to 11-5 overall and is now 7-3 in the NACC.

Alverno got most of its offense from three players, as Gorman, Jamie Hoernke (14 points) and Ashley Berry (12 points) combined for 55 points. The Inferno in particular did their best work after halftime, shooting 60.9% in the second half (14 of 23) to break open a game that was close early.

Lakeland scored the game's first points just three seconds in, as Trista Barron (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) converted a three-point play, but it would be the only lead of the night for the hosts. The Muskies went nearly seven full minutes without another point and shot just 24.1% (7 of 29) in the first half, trailing 25-16 at the break in an overly physical game in which offensive looks for either team were few and far between.

The Muskies hung around for a time in the second half, but Alverno slowly pulled away late. The lead ballooned to 16 after a three-pointer by Anna Boteva made it 46-30 with 8:37 left, and the Inferno led by as many as 24 points late.

Leah Eisner (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) led Lakeland with 13 points, the lone player in double figures, and also added seven rebounds. Rachael Millner (So.-Mundelein, Ill.) scored a career-high eight points off the bench and Bailey Grayvold (Fr.-Norway, Mich.) also added eight.

Lexie Greenheck (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) also collected nine rebounds as the Muskies won the rebounding battle 40-37. Lakeland's rebounding total included 15 offensive boards, but the team struggled to take advantage, converting those into just 10 points.

Alverno shot 44.7% from the field for the game (21 of 47), including 5-for-12 from three-point range. The visitors also hit 23 of 30 free throws (76.7%).

The Muskies are back on the road Saturday when they travel to face Aurora (Ill.) University at 4:15 p.m. in another conference matchup.
