Falcons Too Much in Second-Half, Run Away From Warriors

More news about: Messiah

Williamsport, PA – Katelynn Vanderhoff scored 15 points, collected seven rebounds, and grabbed five steals to lead Messiah College to a 64-49 win over Lycoming College. Vanderhoff collected back-to-back steals to start the second-half, scoring in transition both times to prompt a 19-0 run by the Falcons.

The big streak for Messiah broke open a 29-23 halftime lead and put the Falcons up by 25 points as they went on to their fifth double-digit win in the past eight games.

In the first-half Messiah pushed their early lead to as many as 10 points, with Taylor Miller and Gillian Glackin combining for 13 points through the first 20 minutes. The Falcons' defense also stifled the Warriors' offense as Lycoming shot just 10-31 (32.3%) prior to the break.

At the half the Falcons led 29-23, identical to the halftime score from when the teams met in early January. At the start of Wednesday's second-half, the Falcons also made sure the outcome would be the same.

As mentioned, Vanderhoff grabbed consecutive steals to open the half, scoring twice in transition to put the Falcons back up by 10 points. After buckets from Hannah Nichols and Glackin, Vanderhoff again stole possession and scored on the fastbreak.

Now ahead 39-23, Glackin went to work in the post for Messiah, getting fouled and going to the free-throw line to score the next four points. Moments later Chelsea Danel nailed a three-pointer to cap the 19-0 streak.

The Falcons held onto their double-digit lead to the end, even withstanding a 12-0 run by the Warriors that started at the 6:50 mark and ran for 4:04. Dominique Seamon ended that streak with a jumper to account for two of her career-high 11 points.

Glackin finished with 12 points to back up the well-rounded performance from Vanderhoff, with Nichols finishing with nine points and seven rebounds.

Julia Antonelli finished with a game-high 16 points for Lycoming.

The win for Messiah moved them to 14-6 overall and 10-3 in the Commonwealth Conference—their 15th-straight season with double-digit wins in conference.

Lycoming fell to 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the Commonwealth.

The Falcons will next play on Saturday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Arcadia University.
