The Lakeland College women's basketball team delivered a barrage of three-pointers in the first half, and then rode the hot hand of Leah Eisner (Sr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) for an 89-77 win over Rockford (Ill.) University Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies delivered a superb offensive show, canning 13 three-pointers in the first half alone and 16 in the game, easily the team's best performance from behind the arc this season. Six different players hit from long range, and the team shot 16 of 28 from three-point land for the game (57.1%).
As dominant as Lakeland was in the first half as a team from outside, Eisner was on the inside in the second half. She scored 24 of her career-high 27 points in the final 20 minutes, helping the Muskies to an important NACC win. Lakeland gained a split of the season series with the Regents and improved to 7-11 overall and 4-9 in conference, and the Muskies are now just one game behind Rockford (8-10 overall, 5-8 NACC) in the conference standings.
It was Lakeland's best offensive performance of the season in virtually every way. The 89 points and 49.2% shooting (31 of 63) were season highs, as were the 31 field goals, and the 16 three-pointers were six more than the team's previous season high.
The Muskies never trailed, starting the game off with six three-pointers in the first 4:41. Lakeland always had an answer every time Rockford got close in the first half, and usually that answer was from downtown. Thirteen of the team's 16 first half field goals were from long distance, and when Gaby Cappaert (So.-Stephenson, Mich.) hit a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer the Muskies took a 49-38 lead into the locker room.
The Regents were able to keep pace for much of the first half, shooting 48.4% for the half and cutting an early 11-point deficit to two before going back down by 11 at halftime. Rockford never got as close in the second half, though, as Eisner was too dominant.
The senior post was quiet in the first half with just three points before going to the bench early with two fouls, but she repeatedly got position inside and hit 10 of 11 from the field in the second half. Eisner eclipsed her previous career high of 25 points and finished the game 11-for-12 from the floor, including 3-for-4 on three-pointers.
The Muskies took a 65-50 lead after two free throws by Vashia Gordon (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.), who also had a terrific game with career highs of 15 points and 14 rebounds. Rockford scored eight straight points and got back as close as seven on three different occasions, but Lakeland went on another 11-2 run late to put the game away.
Five players in all scored in double figures for Lakeland. Lexie Greenheck (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) scored 12 and both Kayla Clark (Fr.-West Bend, Wis.) and Trista Barron (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) added 11 points each. Greenheck grabbed six rebounds and Clark delivered a career-high seven assists.
Erin Ryczek led Rockford with 18 points. The Regents shot 47.6% from the field (30 of 63) but were just 11-for-22 from the free throw line.
The Muskies have another important home game Wednesday night when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
