Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference newcomer Southern Virginia 54-45 to complete a season sweep on Wednesday night. The Saints improve to 13-7 overall but the game does not count in the league standing because the Knights are in their final year of the NCAA reclassification process.
Kievanna Lacey led the Saints with a game-high 11 points while Katelyn Fischer added 10 to go with four rebounds and four steals. Aliya Roseborough paced MU on the boards with eight rebounds.
Marymount hit the first basket of the game, a jumper from Theresa Wicks, and never trailed in the contest after an early 2-2 tie just 2:13 in. The Saints didn't allow another SVU (3-17) field goal for five minutes before sparking a 14-2 eight minute run that put the Blue and White ahead 29-12 with 4:14 remaining. Marymount would push its lead to as many as 18 in the frame before taking a 37-21 lead going into halftime.
The Saints took a 20-point lead early in the second half and hovered near that margin for the next 15 minutes. With MU up 53-32 with 5:36 remaining, Southern Virginia mounted a late comeback but the deficit was too much to overcome despite closing out the game on a 13-1 run against Marymount's reserves.
Crystal Cleveland led Southern Virginia with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it travels to face 15th-ranked York (Pa.).
