CHICAGO, Ill. - Fiona McMahon poured in 24 points to lead the Elmhurst women's basketball team to a 68-57 win at North Park University.
Elmhurst (12-8, 4-5 CCIW) led for nearly the entire contest, scoring the game's opening bucket an surrendering the lead just once. Leading by just a point midway through the first half, the Bluejays ripped off a 9-0 run keyed by four points from McMahon to open up a 10-point cushion. Elmhurst extended its lead up to 11 points, before North Park (10-10, 3-6 CCIW) closed the half with an 8-2 run to pull to within five points at the break.
North Park hung with the Bluejays early in the second half, slicing Elmhurst's lead down to two points on a Dominique Williams jumper with 14 minutes remaining. The Bluejays answered back with five straight points off a Clarire Monroe lay-up and a three-point play from Melanie Schwertdmann.
The Vikings pulled back to within five points with 10:47 left, but a 6-0 mini run from Elmhurst gave the Bluejays a double digit lead. North Park managed to come no closer than nine points for the game's final eight minutes as Elmhurst pulled away for the 11-point victory.
Both teams shot an identical 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor, but Elmhurst outscored North Park 32-22 in the pain and also turned 21 North Park turnovers into 20 points.
North Park had no answer for McMahon as the Elmhurst junior shot 8-of-11 from the floor and finished a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line while also pulling down six rebounds. Katie Swanson added 14 points and seven rebounds while Schwerdtmann came off the bench to score 12 and grab a team-leading eight rebounds. Devin Vaughn added eight points for the Bluejays while Monroe scored seven.
North Park was led by Rachel Torres' 19-point effor in the loss. Liz Rehberger added 14 points for the Vikings.
Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, February 8.
