Freshman Kayla Clark (West Bend, Wis.) scored a season-high 15 points and the Lakeland College women's basketball team surged in the second half to defeat Maranatha Baptist University 66-49 Monday night in a non-conference game.

Clark made four three-pointers, including three during a key run early in the first half, and the Muskies won on the road to improve to 4-5 overall this season. Lakeland also earned a win over its former Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival Maranatha Baptist, which dropped to 4-4.

The Muskies shot just 35.1% for the game (20 of 57), but hit enough from three-point range (9 of 24) and from the free throw line (17 of 20) to be successful. Lakeland also limited the Crusaders to 31.5% shooting (17 of 54) and took advantage of 26 turnovers by the hosts.

Clark scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half, all as part of an 18-6 run early in the half as the Muskies took control. Her back-to-back triples started the run, and her fourth three of the night gave Lakeland its first double-digit lead at 45-34 with 10:44 to play. She would add a free throw to cap the run and make it 49-36, and the Crusaders never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Maranatha Baptist led for a good share of the first half on the strength of shot blocker Laci Peterson. The 6-foot-4 post player swatted away seven shots in the first half, and the Crusaders led by six just before halftime until the Muskies scored nine consecutive points right before halftime for a 29-26 lead.

Trista Barron (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored 13 points for Lakeland, including a pair of three-pointers. Vashia Gordon (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) also had a good all-around game with 10 points, five rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.

Peterson finished with eight points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks, but made just 4 of 14 shots from the field. Allison Schulz led the Crusaders with 10 points but was the team's lone player in double figures.

Lakeland is in action again on Saturday when it travels to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.
