Oxy Women's Hoops Cruises Past Caltech

LOS ANGELES — Elizabeth Messick led a balanced offensive attack as the Occidental College women's basketball team cruised past Caltech, 65-45, at Rush Gym on Saturday.

Oxy improves to 11-8 overall and 5-6 in SCIAC play. Caltech falls to 1-19 and 0-11.

Messick, Oxy's star 6-foot-3 post player, finished with 10 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes played.

Erin Matsumoto scored nine, while Crystal GoodwinBrittni Walker and Stefanie Young each added eight.

Eda Graham grabbed eight rebounds for the Tigers.

"Everyone contributed to the win tonight," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "I was happy with the way our bench played."

Stephanie Wong posted a game-high 18 points for the Beavers.

Oxy's full-court pressure forced 17 turnovers and the Tigers took good care of the ball, only coughing it up eight times.

Ashton Reid had four assists and no turnovers for the Tigers.

Oxy returns to action on Sunday at 5 p.m., hosting UC Santa Cruz.

"We have a few hours to regroup and then we get to take on a very good UC Santa Cruz team," Aladzhanyan said.
