Clarkson rallies past William Smith 69-57

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but Clarkson University rallied for a 69-57 Liberty League victory in Alumni Gymnasium this afternoon. The Herons shot just 29 percent in the second half compared to the Knights' 43 percent.

William Smith (14-5, 7-3) led 34-29 at halftime and used a 6-0 run early in the second half to build a 44-33 lead. Over the next 10 minutes, Clarkson (8-8, 3-5) outscored the Herons 25-7 to take a 58-51 lead. William Smith junior forward Chloe Hayter scored the game's next three points to make it a four-point game, but the Knights countered with six straight points to go up 64-54 and iced the game at the free throw line going 5-for-6 in the final minute.

Cara Manfredi led CU with 24 points, including 16 in the second half. Ashley Loggins added 16 points, including 10 after the break. Stephanie Grobe chipped in 15 points. For the game, the Knights shot 41 percent from the floor and made 21-of-31 from the foul line.

William Smith got at least four points from nine different players, led by senior guard Sasha Borenstein's 10 points. Hayter finished with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Jacqueline Murphy had eight points and eight boards. The Herons shot 37 percent for the game with five 3-pointers. William Smith entered the contest averaging 22 trips to the line, but managed only six today, making four.

Both teams had 15 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive boards, but CU did more with their second looks, outscoring William Smith 18-9 in second chance points.

The Herons will return to the court at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4, when they close out their four-game road trip at RIT.
