Whitman's 33 Points Can't Carry Hilbert In Setback

More news about: Hilbert

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Natalie Whitman produced a career high scoring effort tonight, but her 33 points were not enough to carry the Hilbert College women's basketball team in their 69-58 loss at Medaille College. The game was never out of reach for either team, but the Lauren Jensen prevented Hilbert from pulling an upset.

Medaille had three of their six players reach for double figure scoring led by Jensen's 23. Hilbert got scoring out seven players total, with the next closest contributor being freshman Emily Speidel who netted eight points.

The first half was a back and forth battle with neither team holding a lead of more than four points for most of the 20-minutes. Medaille used a 12-4 run to pull ahead at the break, 32-25.

Jensen led all scorers with 17 points while Whitman trailed with 13.

After the break, Whitman went wild and added 20 more points to her total. While Jensen cooled from the floor (2 of 9), Danielle Reinwald picked up the slack matching Jensen's first half effort.

Medaille stretched their lead to as many as 16-points with 8 minutes remaining but the closest the Hawks could get was 7 points on two occasions late in the game.

Whitman and Haley Oakes led Hilbert on the glass as each earned six rebounds. Oakes added five assists and three points to the mix. Speidel was credited with four assists.

Hilbert finished the night shooting 40.3% from the field while holding Medaille to 41.4%. Neither team was whistled for many fouls, so trips to the charity stripe were infrequent. Medaille benefited from 21 points off Hilbert's turnovers to pull the win out.

The Hawks return to action this weekend when they host Penn State Altoona at 4pm in the Hafner Recreation Center. Their next and last home game is set for Saturday February 15, when they host Pitt-Greensburg and will hold their senior day celebrations for Kateland Ball, Jenna Crans (both of whom are graduating after three years) and Natalie Whitman.
