The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team surrendered eight of the final 11 points of the game and dropped a 66-58 decision to Cortland Tuesday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport.
Freshman Anna Feller (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) hit a jumper with 2:27 left to play in the second half to cut a Cortland (11-6 Overall, 7-3 SUNYAC) lead to a single point at 56-55.
The Red Dragons responded with the next six points but a 3-pointer by senior Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) trimmed the lead to four points at 62-58 but Cortland connected on all four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Brockport (8-8, 4-5) traded baskets throughout the first half and entered the halftime intermission tied at 36-36. The Golden Eagles hit 6-of-12 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and also connecting on nearly 50 percent of their shots from the field (14-for-29). The defense was also strong, forcing 16 Cortland turnovers for the game.
In the second half, Brockport opened up a four-point lead early and a basket by Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) gave the Golden Eagles a 53-51 lead with 7:08 left to play.
Cortland tied up the game a minute later and took the lead for good at the 4:39 point of the half with a three-point play and led 56-53.
Feller's jumper two minutes later trimmed the lead to a point before Cortland's final run.
Welch led Brockport with 17 points and sophomore Bree Fortney (Lorain, OH/Lorain) added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Marshall and Kaitlin Hammersley (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) each scored seven and Feller finished with six points on 3-of-5 shooting for the Golden Eagles. Welch handed out six assists and Marshall led the way with three steals.
