FROSTBURG, Md. – Tied for the ninth-best individual scoring effort in program history, senior Nicole Mitchell's career-high 38 points paced one of the finest offensive explosions in the 42-year history of Christopher Newport University women's basketball. The 18th-ranked Captains poured in 116 points, racing past Frostburg State by 27 points, 116-89, with the fourth most points ever scored in a game by CNU women's hoops.

Christopher Newport improves to 14-2 overall, with a 7-1 mark in league play, after winning their ninth straight game. Frostburg fell to 3-12 overall, 1-8 in the CAC.

Early in the first half the story looked to be junior Camry Green, who looked to be in midsesason form despite playing in just her sixth game after an injury sidelined her for the first half of the season. After just 11 minutes of action, Green had already collected her second double-double of the season, 22nd of her career. At halftime, the Richmond, Va. native had scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in just ten minutes of action.

If possible, her efforts were shadowed, though, by senior Nicole Mitchell who went off in the first half. The Captains forward scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc. Her performance spurred one of the finest shooting efforts in team history for a half. While Mitchell had the strongest half, all ten Captains that played in the opening stanza played a role in scoring an impressive 65 points.

CNU had 15 assists on the 27 first-half buckets and the team shot a blazing 65.9% from the floor. That was only bested by a 71.4% effort from long-range, as the Captains knocked down 5-of-7 attempts from deep.

After the intermission, the Captains offense slowed for the first portion of the second half, as Frostburg State scored 20 of the first 35 points in the half, but Mitchell and the Captains righted the ship out of a timeout and kept the pressure on the gas pedal. The Bobcats cut a 41-point deficit all the way down to 27, at 84-57, but would get no closer as the Captains responded. Perry hit a couple free-throws and a fast-break layup, followed by a long three-pointer by Mitchell and two more free-throws to get the lead back to 36, 93-57.

The Captains were closing in on 100 with eight minutes left on the clock, and got there when Mitchell got on another hot streak from the field. She went 6-for-6 in a four-minute stretch to blow past her previous career high of 28 points, finishing the game with a new mark of 38. It was the first 30-point game by a CNU player since Chelsie Schweers scored 35 against Kean in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, and the most points scored by an individual since Schweers' 45 against Meredith that season.

After her 80% shooting in the first half, she went 8-of-11 in the second to finish the game with one of the best single game efforts in program history with a 16-for-21 performance, 4-of-5 from long range. She added 11 rebounds to give her a double-double, her second of the season and ninth of her career.

Mitchell's sensational scoring effort was maybe the highlight, but certainly not the only Captain with a strong performance on Saturday. Green's double-double would grow to 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Tia Perry added 17 points, six boards, five steals and four steals. Off the bench, Brandi Holland had seven of the 18 CNU steals, as the Captains defense forced 27 FSU turnovers.

Frostburg had four players in double figures, including a 30-point performance from Elaina Hummel. She had 15 points from the free-throw line, and finished just two rebounds and two assists shy of a triple-double. Simone Wise added 23 points and five rebounds while Ronje James and Kayla Love each added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Captains finished the game shooting 61.3% from the field on 46-75 shooting. It was the best shooting performance as a team since a 73.8% shooting effort in 2010.

Christopher Newport will be back in action on Monday, January 27 as they travel to St. Mary's College (Md.) to make up a game that was postponed earlier this week. Tip is set for 6:00 pm.
