OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's Basketball team defeated the Mount Saint Mary Knights in a Skyline Conference match up 82-67 on Saturday afternoon at home. The win improved Old Westbury's conference record to an even 3-3 (5-12 overall), while the Knights fell to 2-4 (2-14 overall) in conference play.
Right out of the gate the Panthers catapulted to a 4-0 lead thanks to back-to-back buckets by Jasmine Robinson. The Knights responded quickly, answering with an 8-0 run of their own, doubling-up Old Westbury with an 8-4 lead four minutes into the game. Thanks to timely shooting and aggressive defense, the Panthers battled on both ends of the floor and kept the game close. The Panthers rounded out the half on an 8-0 run in the final 1:25 of play to go into halftime with a 37-34 lead.
The second half of action saw dominance by Old Westbury. The Panthers roared out of the locker room with high intensity and put together a 22-6 run, making the score 59-40 with 13:28 left in the second half. The Panthers controlled the ball and played efficiently the rest of the way, shooting 45.7% from the field and cruised to a 15-point victory in front of the hometown crowd.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Robinson, who deposited 20 points on 9-15 shooting. The upstart guard was also a menace on the defensive side, adding a game-high six steals. DeAndra Scott recorded her 13th double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds in addition to distributing a team-high five assists. Clarissa Gallagher (15 points) andRaven Pentz (13 points) were key factors in the win as well, each sinking a trio of three-pointers.
Pacing Mount Saint Mary was Rachel Perrone, who ended with 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting, 16 boards, and five blocks. Also contributing was Jessice Perrone, who chipped in 18 points. Natalie Candarelli added a double-double of her own, amassing 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Panthers were dominant in the victory, winning many statistical battles. Old Westbury out-rebounded the Knights, 54-46, outscored them in the paint 36-26, and scored 17 second-chance points compared to the Knights' eight. Old Westbury made up a lot of ground in bench scoring, where they outscored the Knights 15-0. The Panthers were golden from behind the arc, hitting on 7-of-17 while the visiting Knights only converted on 2-of-17 attempts from long-range.
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues its conference campaign on Thursday (January 30) when they travel to Farmingdale, New York to take on the Farmingdale State Rams. Tip-off is set for 6 p m. inside Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.
