Mount Saint Vincent Stifled By Farmingdale State

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team had its five game winning streak snapped and was dealt its first home loss of the season on Saturday following a 69-44 loss to visiting Farmingdale State. Junior Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished the day with her 10th double-double of the season.

 

Saturday's game featured six ties and five lead changes over the first 10:27 of action before Farmingdale State took the lead for good in the game on a Camille Romero free-throw at the 9:33 mark of the first half.

 

After a Fraser free-throw moved the Mount in front 12-11 with 10:13 to play in the half, the Dolphins went without a field-goal for nearly seven minutes. The Rams forced seven turnovers in that stretch as they moved in front 20-12 on an Andrea Desvignes lay-in with 4:20 on the first half clock.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would rally to get back to within two points on a Christina Barone (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper with 45 seconds left in the half, but Romero sent the visitors to the locker room with a 24-20 lead with a layup in the final half minute to close out the scoring in the opening period.

 

Over the final 10:13 of the first half, Mount Saint Vincent was held to 2-for-12 shooting and turned the ball over eight times. For the half, the Dolphins went 7-for-28 from the floor and 2-for-9 from three-point range. The Mount turned the ball over 16 times in the first 20 minutes, leading to 11 Farmingdale State points. Brittany Carroll (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with 11 first half points.

 

Brittany Lee (Newton, N.J.) got the Mount back to within two points coming out of halftime with a fast break bucket, but Farmingdale State used a 15-4 run over nearly six minutes to move in front 39-26 with 13:48 left in regulation. The Dolphins went 2-for-11 from the floor in that span, while Romero scored 11 points for the visitors.

 

Following a Nicky Young lay-in with 15:52 left in the game gave the Rams a 34-24 lead, the Mount Saint Vincent deficit never fell below double-figures. Farmingdale State went on to expand its lead to a game-high 25 points in the final minute on a Loren Smith jump shot with 17 seconds left to play.

 

The Dolphins were held below 69 points in a game for the first time this season and also recorded season-lows in field goals made with 16 and field-goal percentage at 25-percent.

 

Fraser finished Saturday's game 4-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the free-throw line on her way to 12 points. She finished off her sixth straight double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with a game-high four blocked shots.

 

Carroll did not score in the second half and finished with 11 points on 4-for-11 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. She also swiped a pair of steals for the Dolphins. Barone led the Dolphins with three assists and hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds.

 

Farmingdale State was paced by a game-high 26 points from Romero who went 8-for-13 from the field and 9-for-13 from the free-throw line. Young scored 10 points off the bench for the Rams and Desvignes finished with nine points and a team-high four assists. Lushanta Savadel led all players in the game with 13 rebounds.

 

Overall, Mount Saint Vincent went 16-for-64 from the floor, 2-for-17 from three-point range and 10-for-23 from the free-throw line. The Dolphins turned the ball over a season-high 32 times, leading to 28 Farmingdale State points.

 

Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 11-4 overall, 4-2 in league play and 8-1 at the Peter Jay Sharp Center. The Dolphins will continue a four game home stand on Thursday when they play host to league rival Sage. Tip-off with the Gators is set for 7:00 p.m.
