The Oglethorpe women's basketball team had difficulty hitting shots Saturday evening in Dorough Field House and it did them in, as the visiting Sewanee Tigers prevailed 64-52.

The Stormy Petrels forced 24 Sewanee turnovers for the game and scored 25 points off of those turnovers, but they shot just 32 percent, including 20 percent from 3-point range. In addition, the Tigers outrebounded them 38-24.

The game started off relatively well for the Petrels. Despite some back-and-forth, the home side had the better of the first 12 minutes and led by five, 20-15, with 8:10 remaining in the half. However, a 6-0 run from Sewanee over the next three minutes gave them a 21-20 advantage with 5:24 left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period, and Sewanee held a 27-26 lead at halftime.

The Tigers outshot the Petrels 42-to-28 percent over the course of the period, and Oglethorpe shot just seven percent (1-for-14) from the 3-point arc in the half. The Petrels did force 13 Sewanee turnovers in the frame.

Sewanee immediately pushed the lead out in the second half, going on an 11-2 run out of the gate to take a 38-29 lead with 15:35 remaining in the half. The Petrels answered with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to one, 40-39, with 12:24 left, but the Tigers came back with a 6-0 run to extend the lead back out with 10 minutes remaining.

The Stormy Petrels again made a push, though. They quickly got back to within a couple points, 46-44 with 7:39 remaining, and then traded baskets with Sewanee over the next four minutes. With 3:03 remaining, the Tigers led 56-52. But the Petrels would not score again. Sewanee ended the game on an 8-0 run, hitting 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch, and came away with the 12-point victory.

Sewanee outscored Oglethorpe 37-26 in the half. They outrebounded the Petrels 20-9, blocked seven shots to Oglethorpe's one, and outshot the Petrels 53-to-36 percent. They also shot 46 percent from long distance to Oglethorpe's 36 percent over the half. Sophomore guard Kendelle Culpepper kept the Petrels in it for much of the half, scoring 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting while passing out two assists.

Overall, Culpepper finished with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 5-of-5 free-throw shooting. Sophomore guard Emily Buck added 13 points and three assists. She was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

For the game, the Tigers shot 47 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range. They picked up their first-ever SAA win on the night after going 0-14 in the league's inaugural season of 2012-13. They were 0-5 in SAA play coming into this game. It was their first conference win since an SCAC victory in February 2012.

The loss drops the Petrels to 4-13 on the season, 2-4 in SAA play. The squad falls to sixth place in the league, pending the results of other conference games on Sunday afternoon. They will next be in action on Friday evening, when they take on Millsaps at 6 p.m. in Dorough Field House.
