WALTHAM, Mass – Danielle McNabb's potential game-winning jumper rimmed in and out at the final buzzer and Brandeis University held on for a 58-57 victory over the University of Rochester in women's basketball at the Red Auerbach Arena on Friday night.
Brandeis built a 58-54 lead with 1:43 to go after Nicolina Vitale hit a jumper from left of the circle. McNabb made the back end of two free throw attempts 17 seconds later. She pulled Rochester within a point, 58-57, when she connected on a jumper in the lane with 37.4 seconds to play.
Rochester regained possession after a Brandeis turnover with just over eight seconds remaining. The Yellowjackets called time with 5.5 seconds left and the ball just shy of midcourt. When Rochester set up, Brandeis called timeout. After that, Rochester called one more time out before running the final play.
Blair Landolfi threw the ball to McNabb along the right sideline. She drove to the baseline and pulled up from 12 feet. The ball circled the rim and fell off on the left side as the buzzer sounded.
McNabb led Rochester (7-8, 1-3 University Athletic Association) with a season's high 18 points. Loren Wagner had 11 points and 14 rebounds, her eighth double-double this year. Tylar Guerrieri scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Janelle Rodriguez scored 11 points for Brandeis (7-8, 1-3). Vitale scored 10, and Frankie Pinto added nine.
Rochester shot 45% from the floor (21-47) but made just one of nine outside the arc (11%). The Yellowjackets were 14 of 22 from the line. Brandeis hit 25 of 65 from the floor (38%), two of 10 on 3-pointers, and six of nine from the line.
The Yellowjackets held a 39-32 edge on the backboard. Brandeis took advantage of transition opportunities. The Judges scored 20 points off 22 Rochester turnovers.
In the first half, Rochester trailed 22-18 with 6:26 left. Guerrieri scored four points in a 9-0 burst that pushed Rochester in front, 27-22, with 4:19 remaining. The Yellowjackets led, 33-31, at halftime. McNabb sank a trey to start the second half and give Rochester a 36-31 lead. Landolfi's layup four minutes into the period made it 43-39.
Brandeis ran off nine straight, finishing the sprint on layups by Julia Scanlon and Maria Jackson. That put the hosts on top, 48-43, with less than 10 minutes to play.
This marked the third straight game – all UAA opponents – that came down to a final shot. Last Friday, a potential gametying shot by Case came just after the buzzer and Rochester held on for a 55-53 win. On Sunday, Carnegie Mellon hit a gamewinner with 34 seconds to play and the Tartans survived two Rochester shots in the closing seconds to post a 71-70 win at the Palestra.
On Sunday, Rochester goes to NYU, which just handed Emory University its first loss of the season on Friday night. NYU is 14-1 overall, 3-1 in the UAA, one game behind Washington.
