Complete Team Effort Leads LeTourneau Women's Basketball to 81-71 Win Over Louisiana College

The LeTourneau University women's basketball came back from a one-point halftime deficit to post an 81-71 win over Louisiana College on Thursday night in Pineville.

In the second 20 minutes, the YellowJackets put forth a complete team effort for the come-from-behind win. Offensively, LeTourneau shot 46.9% (15-for-32) from the field and 87.5% (7-for-8) from the free-throw line; meanwhile, defensively, the YellowJackets held the Wildcats to a dismal 27.6% (8-for-29) effort from the field. Also, in the second half, LeTourneau controlled a22-10 advantage on points in the paint, 8-3 margin in points on the paint and 16-4 on points off the bench.

LeTourneau (7-8, 5-7 ASC) had a balanced offensive attack in the win as three YellowJackets scored in double figures. Sophomore Ashley Stephens had a season-high 16 points on the strength of an 8-for-9 effort from the field to lead the team. Teammate junior Rebecca Stewart had 10 points – all of which came in the second half - and junior Ashley Fajardo added 13 points on the strength of three 3 pointers.

Louisiana College (10-5, 8-4 ASC) had four players in double digits including 16 each from Kaci Willis and Natosha Morvant. Skylar Chenevert and Karylon Thornton added 10 points for the Wildcats.

"It was such a phenomenal effort tonight by our young ladies," said YellowJackets head coach Corey Thomaston. "We got contributions from our entire squad tonight and I literally could not be happier with the grit and determination we fought with in the contest. This is a great statement for what our program is about."

As explained by Thomaston, it was an all-around team effort as they had 11-different scorers including freshman Ashley Reed, who tied a career-high with seven points and set a new career-high with five assists, senior Jessica Manas had nine points off the bench and tied a season-high with four rebounds, freshman Marialle Boles tied a career-high with six points and senior Julencia Curtis nearly had a double double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

After the seventh tie of the game, 61-61 at the 8:03 mark of the second half, a layup by Boles sparked a 14-3 run by LeTourneau that put the visitors up by a 75-64 margin with 3:08 to play. LC would draw no closer than nine for the rest of the contest.

The YellowJackets will continue its road trip on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tilt against Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., who they defeated in Longview, 65-52 on December 5th.
