Mariners Win Fourth Straight

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Maine Maritime won its fourth-straight game with a 58-48 win over Lyndon State in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Friday. The Mariners improved to 8-6 overall, 6-2 NAC, while the Hornets fell to 1-12, 1-8.

Cheyenne Malloy, Kari Jones and Kristi Willey led a balanced attack for Maine Maritime with nine points each while Jillian Perron and Ashley Shine chipped in eight each. Leah Jackson grabbed nine rebounds for the the Mariners and Jones and Rebekah Campbell collected seven each. Jones had a team-high three assists and Jackson had six steals.

Chelsea Watson had 15 points, two assists and three steals for the Hornets and Chelsea Bagley added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Malloy scored the Mariners first nine points on a trio of threes to put Maine Maritime ahead 9-4 with 15:47 on the clock. Consecutive Willey threes gave the Mariners a 17-4 lead with 11:58 in the first half before the Hornets pulled within two, 25-23, on a Watson trey with four minutes left before the break. Willey answered with a three, the teams traded baskets and Watson hit a jumper to make it 31-27 at halftime.

Lyndon evened the game at 35 on an Emily Gray jumper five minutes into the second half before the Mariners went on a 13-2 scoring run, capped by Jones' three at 9:01, to lead 48-37. Maine Maritime's lead never dipped below seven the remainder of the game.

The Mariners shot an impressive 10 of 19 from the behind arc and out rebounded the Hornets 42-35.

The Mariners return to action Saturday, 3 p.m., at Johnson State.
