UMHB women fall to Howard Payne 60-54

Brownwood, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team comeback bid was doomed by three late turnovers as the Cru had its seven-game win streak snapped in a 60-54 loss to Howard Payne University Thursday night in Brownwood. The loss drops the UMHB women to 9-7 overall and 9-4 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Lady Jackets improve to 10-6 overall and 9-4 in the ASC on the year.

The Cru opened the game with a 9-2 run and led 29-25 at halftime. The UMHB lead would grow to six in the early going of the second half before HPU battled back to take a 37-35 lead with 15:23 remaining. The Cru tied the game at 39, but a Yellow Jacket 13-6 run made it 52-45 with 7:14 left to play. UMHB cut the gap to two points three more times, the last at 56-54 on Taylor Tucker's jumper with 1:05 on the clock. The Cru forced a missed shot on the next HPU possession, but turned the ball over before the team could get off a potential game-tying shot. Danyel Bradley hit two free-throws to make it 58-54 HPU with 11 seconds to go. Another Cru turnover led to two more Bradley free-throws and the Cru also turned the ball over on its final possession to end the comeback bid.

Tucker topped UMHB with 23 points and she also grabbed nine rebounds. Alyssa Dean was the only other Cru player in double figures with 10 points. Jovana Miles pulled down a game-high 12 boards for UMHB. The Cru shot 43 percent from the field, but attempted just two free-throws in the second half and eight for the game. UMHB out rebounded HPU 52-28 in the game but committed 27 turnovers in the loss.

Bradley finished with a game-high 27 points to lead the Yellow Jackets and she was 10-10 from the free-throw line. Britani Gattis added 10 points and seven rebounds for HPU. The Yellow Jackets shot 34 percent from the field, went 3-19 from three-point range, but hit 13-18 from the charity stripe in the game.

The Cru women will close out the road trip with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Sul Ross State University in Alpine on Saturday. UMHB will then play six of its final eight regular season games at home at the Mayborn Campus Center.
