NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Junior Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif.) scored a game-high 18 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:00 remaining, as Smith College defeated visiting Babson College, 63-60, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
With the victory, Smith snapped an 11-game drought against Babson. Both teams are now 7-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
Solis registered six steals and senior Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn.) added 15 points and six rebounds for the Pioneers.
First-year Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) netted 14 points while sophomore Linnett Graber(Roseland, N.J.) contributed a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 boards for the Beavers. Classmate Megan Otto (Scituate, Mass.) chipped in with a season-high eight points and first-year Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) added seven points and a career-high nine rebounds off the bench.
Smith grabbed a 9-3 lead just 3:11 into the opening half, but Babson responded with a 15-8 spurt, keyed by a pair of three-pointers by junior Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass.) and one from first-year Gena Restiano (Revere, Mass.) to take an 18-17 lead midway through the period.
The Beavers scored 12 points off 13 Pioneers' turnovers in the first half, and used 13-4 advantage in bench points to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room. Smith shot 41.7 percent (10-for-24) in and opening stanza that featured seven ties and seven lead changes.
Babson pushed its lead to five on three occasions early in the second half and led 43-38 after a three-point play by Graber with 13:50 to go in the game. The Pioneers answered with an 8-2 spurt, getting three-pointers from junior Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn.) and first-year Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif.), to go in front 46-45 at the 10:11 mark.
Trailing 47-46, the Green and White used a jumper from Graber and two free-throws to move back in front 50-47, but Drummond answered with a three for the Pioneers two possessions later to pull even at 50-50 with 6:17 left. The teams then traded hoops over the next four minutes before Solis' go-ahead three-pointer broke a 58-58 deadlock.
After the Beavers were unable to connect on three shots on their next possession, Castro buried a pair of free throws to the Smith lead to five. Otto cut the deficit to three with 1:03 to go, but Babson was unable to convert a layup with 12 seconds left, and turned the ball over after grabbing a defensive rebounds with four ticks remaining.
The Green and White, which held a 41-32 advantage on the glass, shot 35.6 percent (21-for-59) on the night. The Pioneers shot 44.2 percent (23-for-52) and outscored the Beavers 26-16 in the paint.
Babson returns home to host Springfield on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. while Smith travels to Wheaton on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
GAME NOTES: Wednesday's loss snapped an 11-game winning streak over Smith dating back to 2009…The Beavers are now 32-9 all-time against the Pioneers and have won 21 of the last 23 games in the series going back to 1999…Babson had won its last six games when leading at halftime.
