@OW_Panthers Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Home to Sage

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball surrendered a late lead Saturday afternoon at home in an 87-80 Skyline Conference setback to the Sage Gators.  Old Westbury (4-11) moves to 2-2 in conference play while Sage (8-4) climbs to 4-0.



Old Westbury jumped out to an early 7-2 lead to control the opening minutes of action before Sage answered with a 17-3 run from 15:32 to 9:01 to go up 21-12.  Old Westbury chipped away and closed the gap to four points with 59 seconds left to make it a 38-34 game.  Sara Tironi closed out the half with a three-point play to put Sage up 41-34 at the half.  

Down by seven at intermission, the Panthers roared out of the second-half gates with a 26-9 run in the opening 7:26 to grab a 60-50 lead, its largest advantage of the day.  DeAndra Scott shot 6-of-7 from the field to contribute 12 of Old Westbury's 26 points to start the half.  Sage returned the run with a 26-9 scoring spree over the final 7:36 to grab the 87-80 road victory. 

Scott paced Old Westbury with her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with game highs of 21 points (8-12 FG) and 18 rebounds to go with two steals.  Clarissa Gallagher followed with a season-high 18 points (7-18 FG) and six rebounds while Jasmine Robinson added 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.  Chloe Mellon contributed 10 rebounds and six points in her first start of the season. 

Chelsea Martin scored a team-high 17 points to lead four other Gators in double-digit scoring.  Tironi finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds as Frankie Pearson scored 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench.  Amie Jefferson also sparked the Gators with 13 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench and Megan Bowman chipped in with 12 points and four steals. 

Old Westbury shot 43.1 percent from the floor (31-72), 21.4 percent from three-point range (3-14) and 53.6 percent from the free-throw line (15-28) while Sage connected on 35.5 percent from the field (27-76), 32.3 percent from long distance (10-31) and 65.7 percent from the charity stripe (23-35).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 57-51, scoring 17 points off 18 offensive rebounds as Sage scored 23 points off 21 Panther miscues.  Sage also held a 42-18 edge in bench scoring while Old Westbury dominated the paint with a 46-28 advantage.
