Brooklyn Downs CCNY, 71-53; Extend Win Streak to Four Straight

New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team extended its winning streak to four-straight on Friday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium, as the Bulldogs defeated the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) by a score of 71-53 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC).

With the win, BC improves to 11-4 overall on the season and 6-2 in the CUNYAC, while CCNY falls to 5-9 overall on the year and 3-5 in conference play.

Junior Nacirema Mann recorded a double-double for Brooklyn with 16 points and 12 rebounds coming off the bench. Senior Megan Campbell also finished the game with 16 points, to go with eight rebounds. Junior Nicole Francomano chipped in with 14 points and eight assists, while classmate Sarah Shanderson contributed with 10 points.

CCNY's Karissa Core led all scorers with 27 points, to go with seven assists, while Syreeta Williams added 10 points. Giovanna Blanco chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Beavers began the game scoring the first six points led a pair of baskets from Core. The lead would not last long; however, as the Bulldogs answered quickly with a 7-0 run to go ahead by one, 7-6, with 14:39 remaining in the half. Campbell led the charge scoring four of the seven points.

Brooklyn would never trail again as the visitors would eventually build its lead to double figures, leading by as many as 14, 32-18, with 1:16 left before the halftime horn.  The Beavers would cut their deficit in half with Core singlehandedly getting the home team back into the game with three three-pointers, as CCNY closed out the half on a 9-2 run to go into the locker room down seven, 34-27. Core scored 17 of her game-best 27 points in the opening period.

The Bulldogs would continue to lead throughout the second half as BC kept the Beavers at arm's length. CCNY would never get to within seven as Brooklyn would go on to take the 71-53 victory.

For the game, BC shot 45.0% (27-60) from the field, including 30.0% (3-10) from three. The Bulldogs shot just 53.8% (14-26) from the free throw line.

CCNY by comparison was held to 32.1% (17-53) shooting from the field, including 28.6% (6-21) from beyond the arc. The Beavers also struggled from the line going 13-for-26 (50.0%) from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs stingy defense forced the Beavers into 22 turnovers, which led to 20 points for BC.

Brooklyn will return to action on Wednesday, January 22nd as the Bulldogs will host the Panthers of Purchase College in non-conference action.  The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm tip off at the West Quad Center.
