Freshman Faith Welch leads Brockport in OT Win

Freshman Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) scored 17 points to help The College at Brockport women's basketball team to a 70-67 come-from-behind OT win against Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Friday night at Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Oswego (6-8, 2-5 SUNYAC) opened up the game on a 23-6 run to take control of the first half. The Lakers continued to dominate throughout the period. Brockport (6-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) struggled to score, shooting only 33.3% (9-of-27) from the floor in the first half. Heading into halftime, the Golden Eagles trailed 34-22.

In the second half, Brockport slowly chipped away at the Oswego lead. The Golden Eagles hit three back-to-back three pointers to cut the Lakers lead to only three with 12:34 left to play. Almost three minutes went by before either team could score a point. A layup from Anna Feller (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) brought Brockport to within one point of Oswego at 9:37. Welch drained a three pointer at 8:24 to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game.

The final five minutes of regulation saw five ties, as both teams battled for control. Oswego took the lead, 62-60 with a layup at 1:37, but Brockport answered back as Hannah Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) scored a layup to tie the game up at 62. Both teams missed shots as time ran out, taking the game into overtime.

Brockport netted the first points of overtime as Feller laid in another layup. A layup from Welch pushed the Golden Eagle lead out to four with 3:18 remaining. The Lakers tied things up with 2:00 to play, but Brockport battled back to take the lead at 1:05. Welch made a layup and Feller sunk a short jumper as the Golden Eagle's sealed the overtime victory.

The Golden Eagles finished with three players in double-digits. Welch led the way with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Feller was right behind with 16 points and eight rebounds. Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) was 3-for-3 from long range and chipped in 11 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Brockport shot 42% (29-69) from the floor, 50% from long range and 71.4% (5-for-7) from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles outrebounded Oswego 57-30.
