BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team fell to CUNY Athletic Conference rival Baruch College, 67-48, in the APEX on Wednesday evening.
The Lightning (10-6, 4-3 CUNYAC) were able to get on the board first as junior forward Shalaya Nieves (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) laid the ball up and in to put the home team up, 2-0, just 45 seconds into the game. Sophomore forward Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) nailed a jump shot to put Lehman in front again, 6-5, with 14:45 remaining in the opening half. However, Lehman would surrender the lead just 21 seconds later and never regain it.
Baruch's (9-5, 6-1 CUNYAC) aggressive defense held the Lightning to only nine points for the remainder of the half as Lehman's turnovers and poor shooting helped the Bearcats to an 18 point lead after 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, Lehman would show signs of life, as the Lightning went on a 6-0 run in a span of 2:16 to cut the deficit to 35-24, with 16:45 remaining.
Later in the half, Nieves drove through the lane for a layup to make the score 55-42, in favor of the visitors, with 6:22 remaining. The Bearcats responded by going on a 12-6 run for the remainder of the game to preserve the 67-48 victory.
Freshman guard Amely Del Rosario (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) led the team in scoring with 20 points. Lightbourne chipped in with 12 points while Nieves grabbed eight boards.
Lehman will be back in action in the APEX on Saturday, January 18, for Homecoming. The men's and women's teams will be playing York College in a doubleheader, with the women's game set to begin at 12:00 p.m. The annual Alumni Game will follow the women's game, around 1:45 p.m.
