@OW_Panthers Women's Hoops Fall Short in OT to St. Joseph's (L.I.)

PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - In a hard fought battle, the SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team fell in overtime to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles, 83-77, Wednesday evening in Skyline Conference action from John A. Danzi Athletic Center.  The Golden Eagles snapped a 10 game losing streak, improving to 1-10 on the season while evening up at 1-1 in conference play as Old Westbury dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-1 against conference foes.    

Old Westbury jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening 1:22 to hold its largest advantage of the game.  Laura Cohen drained a three ball to spark the Golden Eagles' 21-6 run from 18:15 to 12:08 for an 11 point lead.  Old Westbury made it a 26-20 game with a 10-5 run before St. Joseph's (L.I.) responded by scoring 11 of the next 18 points to go up by 12 points.  St. Joseph's (L.I.) entered the half with a 41-32 lead. 

St. Joseph's (L.I.) lead blossomed to as many as 13 points just 2:34 into second-half play.  Old Westbury used a 19-8 scoring spree from 16:42 to 8:32 to pull within two points, 54-52.  Raven Pentz drained a jumper with nine seconds left in regulation to cap Old Westbury's 15-8 run over the final 7:14 to send the game into overtime. 

St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored first in the extra frame as Cohen dialed in from long distance to put the Golden Eagles up for good, 72-69, with 4:05 remaining.  Jasmine Robinson sank a pair of free-throws to trim Old Westbury's deficit to 74-73.  The Golden Eagles used a 9-4 run over the final 59 seconds to put the game away.

DeAndra Scott led all Panthers in scoring with 24 points, hitting on 11-of-31 shots from the floor to go along with a season-high 17 rebounds.  Scott's 31 attempts from the field were a career-high and it was just the 10th time in her 88 game playing career she put up 20+ shots in a game.  Chloe Mellon followed with a career-high 19 points off the bench in addition to grabbing nine rebounds (tied career-high).  Clarissa Gallagher added 14 points and nine rebounds.  Jasmine Robinson, the conference leader in steals, was held without a steal for just the second time in her 14 game career and finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Cohen's game-high 30 points led four other Golden Eagles in double-digit scoring.  Cohen added nine rebounds and seven assists to her stat line as she shot 11-of-22 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.   Danielle Hamlin racked up 18 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, five steals and four blocks while Katie McGarrell registered 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 37.5 percent from the field (30-80), 16.7 percent from three-point range (2-12) and 75 percent from the free-throw line (15-20) as the Golden Eagles connected on 36.9 percent from the floor (31-84), 42.4 percent from long distance (14-33) and 50 percent from the charity stripe (7-14).  Old Westbury allowed season-highs of 14 made three-pointers and 33 attempts from beyond the arc.  Old Westbury grabbed a season-best 64 rebounds to finish with a +16 rebounding margin, scoring 20 second chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.  The Golden Eagles failed to capitalize on Old Westbury's poor ball control, scoring just 13 points off 24 Panther turnovers.       

 
SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play in conference action on Saturday (January 18) when they return home for a Skyline Conference battle with the Sage Gators in Old Westbury, New York.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
