GLENSIDE, Pa. — Down by as many as 17 points, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team used a strong surge in the second half to erase the double-figure deficit, but were unable to hold on to a one-point lead late as Valerie DiMuro's layup with four seconds remaining gave Arcadia a 77-76 victory Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference action.

Arcadia (8-6, 2-5 CC) jumped ahead early with a 10-2 run to begin the game. Rachel Forjan and Taylor Alwine hit back-to-back shots to pull E-town (11-2, 5-2 CC) back within four, but the Knights scored five in a row to increase the lead back to nine at 15-6.

The Jays were back within five after Taylor Kreider connected on a layup, but it would be the closest E-town would get for the remainder of the half.

Arcadia built its lead up to its largest of the night at 17, 48-31, with 1:33 left in the first half. Kendra Beittel hit her second of two three-point shots of the opening half and sank two free throws to end the first 20 minutes on a 5-0 for EC. The Knights led 48-36 at the break.

As the hosts had done to open the first half, E-town began the second half with a run of its own to get back into the game. By the 17:30 mark, the lead shrank to six (51-45). Kreider (four points) and Forjan (five points) accounted for the first nine points of the final half for the Jays as they outscored the Knights 9-3 in the first two and half minutes.

After a basket from DiMuro, Forjan and Alwine hit back-to-back jumpers once again, this time knotting the game up at 59-59. The Jays were in the midst of a 10-0 run, which saw them regain the lead and go up by six with 7:47 remaining.

E-town was unable to push its advantage to more than six and Arcadia crept back in front 75-74 with just over a minute left. Amanda Buirch hit two foul shots to give the Knights the one-point lead.

On the other end, Emily Young hit a pair from the charity stripe to return the lead back to E-town with 30 seconds showing on the clock.

Kreider blocked Samantha Caliguiri's layup with 16 seconds to go and the Jays got the ball after it had gone out off Arcadia. It forced the Knights to foul and send EC to the foul line.

Elizabethtown's ensuing one-and-one foul shot was no good and Arcadia's Victoria Mazzeo came down the rebound before the Knights called timeout.

With four seconds left, DiMuro hit the biggest shot of the night, dropping in the game-winning layup on Caliguiri's assist. E-town wasn't able to get a shot off in the final seconds.

Forjan led the Blue Jays with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Kreider and Alwine both had 16 points. Kreider added eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.

The women's basketball team returns to the court this Saturday, January 18, when they travel to face Alvernia. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
