CORTLAND, N.Y. – Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford Academy) scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists as Oneonta defeated host Cortland, 72-65, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game. Oneonta improved to 4-1 in league play and 10-2 overall with its sixth straight win. Cortland is now 4-2 in the conference and 8-5 overall.
Lyteshia Price added 13 points and eight rebounds and Sarah Longto finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the victors. Crawford made 6-of-12 shots from the 3-point line as part of Oneonta's 10-of-24 performance from the arc.
Junior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) and sophomore Caysen Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led Cortland with 13 points each. Cohen hit three of six 3-pointers and Minor led the team with six rebounds. Senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) scored 12 points and junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) made 3-of-7 of her 3-point attempts and ended with nine points.
Oneonta held Cortland scoreless for more than seven minutes late in the game to earn the win. Cortland was within one at 62-61 after a Minor basket with 7:43 left. Neither team made a field goal until a Price jumper with 3:55 left put Oneonta up 65-61, and Crawford made a layup with 1:25 left to put the guests ahead by six. Price added two foul shot at the 1:08 mark.
Cortland ended its drought when Cohen made a layup with 39 seconds remaining to pull the Red Dragons within six. Touhey registered a steal on the ensuing inbounds pass, but Cortland missed two shots and had to foul. Crawford sealed the win with two free throws with 24 seconds left.
Cortland led 17-8 eight minutes into the game after a Wolstenholme 3-pointer, but Oneonta got back to within 23-21 on a Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) 3-pointer with 8:02 left. Cortland scored the next eight points on two Phoebe Byrnes' (Binghamton) 3-pointers sandwiched around a Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) layup and held its largest lead at 31-21 with 6:17 left.
Oneonta, however, finished the half on a 12-4 run and was down only two at halftime. Neither team led by more than six points in the second half until the final two minutes.
Cortland shot 40 percent overall and 39 percent (11-of-28) from 3-point range. Oneonta finished at 39 percent overall and 42 percent from the arc. Oneonta held a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points, with 15 of those coming in the first half.
Cortland will travel to Geneseo for a 6 p.m. game Friday and will return home to host Brockport Saturday at 4 p.m.
