Sewanee, Tenn. (Jan. 14, 2014) – A career-high 28 points by sophomore Jamie Chauvin helped the Sewanee women's basketball team defeat Johnson University, 63-57, Tuesday evening inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The win helped the Tigers even their overall record to 7-7.
Chauvin opened the game by scoring 13 first-half points on 5-of-9 shooting. That in return helped the Tigers make 43.3 percent of their field goals in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, Sewanee raced out to 14-point advantage after Paige Lowe and Kayla Sewell made back-to-back shots.
Over the next seven minutes, Johnson responded with a 19-7 run. During that stretch, the Royals made four three pointers on their next six possessions.
With the game suddenly close, Chauvin took over. The second-year guard from Nashville, Tenn., scored eight of the next 12 points for Sewanee.
That helped the Tigers pushed their advantage to 10, 58-48, with 2:09 to play.
Down the stretch, Johnson forced Sewanee to make its free throws after the Royals pulled to within five points twice with under a minute remaining.
Fortunately for Sewanee, Chauvin and Sewell combined to make five out of six shots from the charity strip, which helped seal the victory.
Overall, Sewanee made a season-high 42.6 percent of its attempts. The Tigers also finished with their second highest assist total of the season (14).
Along with Chauvin, Casey Hassett finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.
Whitney Moore led Johnson with a team-high 14 points. Taylor Baham, Tiffany Smelcer and Madi Phillippie also finished in double figures.
With its non-conference season finished, Sewanee returns to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play against Centre, Saturday. The Tigers and Colonels are scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
