Touhey and Cohen Combine for 47 as Cortland Women Defeat Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) scored a career-high 27 points and sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) tallied 20 points and handed out five assists as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 82-75, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game.

Touhey made 8-of-13 field goals and 9-of-14 free throws. She hit two 3-pointers and added two assists. Cohen shot 7-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Junior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) added 12 points and five assists and junior Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) made two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points and three steals in 21 minutes off the bench.

Also for the Red Dragons (8-4, 4-1 SUNYAC), senior Grace Williamson (Olean) led the team with eight rebounds and junior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) registered a career-best four assists.

SUNYAC scoring leader Becky Hebert (Hilton) led Fredonia (6-4, 1-3 SUNYAC) with 29 points. She made 10-of-17 shots overall and was 4-of-6 from the 3-point line. Jaimie Warren (Lakeview/Frontier) totaled 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) chipped in with nine points and a game-best eight assists.

The game was tied seven times in the first half, and Fredonia went into the locker room with a 36-33 lead. With the score tied at 49-49, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run and held their largest lead at 59-49 with 12:32 remaining. Cortland responded with a 12-2 run over the next five-plus minutes to tie the score at 61-61. Touhey scored the Red Dragons' first eight points of that streak, followed by a Cohen 3-pointer at the 7:31 mark and a Cohen tying free throw with 7:17 left.

Fredonia re-established a 6-point lead at 67-61 on a Hebert layup with 5:10 left, but Wolstenholme hit a 3-pointer, and Touhey and Shannon White (West Islip/St. Anthony's) each made foul shots, and the game was tied at 68-68 with 3:11 remaining.

Williamson stole the ball on Fredonia's next possession and hit a jumper with 2:41 left to give Cortland the lead for good. The Red Dragons led 75-69 after a Cohen trey with 1:33 remaining and 77-71 after two Wolstenholme free throws with 47 seconds left, but Cheatham made a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to cut the Cortland lead to three. Fredonia trailed by four when Cheatham was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left, but she made just one of her three free throws. Cortland sealed the win with two foul shots by both Touhey and Rando in the final 14 seconds.

Cortland will host Oneonta on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
