Blue Devils complete sweep at Colorado tournament by downing St. Joseph

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (January 1, 2014) - UW-Stout made a clean sweep at the Colorado College New Years Ball by holding off St. Joseph College, 60-57, Wednesday at Reid Arena.

The Blue Devils (5-7) held a 32-27 halftime lead, then shot that up to as much as 10 points early in the second half before St. Joseph College, which is located in Brooklyn, NY, eventually took the lead with 12:14 rermaining in the second half and built up a five point lead with just over four minutes left.

Haley Froehlich (Jr, Mondovi) pulled Stout to within three points, 54-51, at 4:12 before freshman point guard Becca Smith (Victoria, Minn) took off.

Smith put Stout ahead with back-to-back jumpers, added a free throw and would score seven points in just over a minute to give Stout a 58-54 lead with 2:12 left in regulation.

The Bears (7-5) pulled to within one point on a 3-pointer by Erica Eddy with seven seconds left. Kyleigh Hebert (So, Spencer) was fouled on the inbound and drained both charity shots. St. Joe's Kelly McNamee threw up a 3-pointer that clanked off the iron and Shelby Sterba (Jr, Tony) sealed the win with the rebound.

Smith led Stout with a career-best 10 points, shooing 4-of-8 from the floor with a 3-pointer and a free throw. Rachel Hanley (Sr, Minong) scored nine points, hitting 3-of-6 3 pointers. Sterba and Hebert each scored eight points, with Sterba recording a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Bears, who played only eight players, had four in double digit scoring, led by McNamee and Eddy with 13 points. Taylor Raccuglia scored 12 points and Samantha Retas had 11 points.

The Blue Devils had won their opening game Tuesday, 80-60, over host Colorado College. Stout returns to Menomonie to host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 4 at 3 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's programs.The Blue Devils will be on the road for the following three games.
