The Oglethorpe women's basketball team dropped to 0-2 in the Country Inn and Suites Holiday Classic Monday evening with a 76-42 loss to undefeated No. 19 York (Pa.).

The Stormy Petrels knew they were in for a tough matchup against York, who came into the game fresh off a one-point victory over No. 22 Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the holiday classic's first day. However, the Petrels stayed in the game for much of the first half. They fell behind 14-4 early, trailing by that deficit with 11:42 remaining in the half. However, they quickly went on a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to five, 18-13, and were still within five with 6:11 remaining in the period. However, a 10-0 run from the visiting Spartans over the next 3:42 quickly put them up by fifteen, 30-15, with 2:29 remaining in the period. From there, York cruised in with a 13-point halftime lead, 32-19.

Sophomore forward Alana Bentley scored 10 points in the half for the Petrels on 5-of-7 shooting. York outshot Oglethorpe 38-to-30 percent for the period.

As the second half began, the Spartans started pulling away in earnest. They began the half on a dizzying 31-9 run over the period's first 15 minutes, giving them a 35-point lead. The Petrels were able to knock the deficit back to 69-39 with 2:56 left, but the Spartans went on another run, this one 7-0, to extend their lead to its largest of the game, 76-39, with 27 seconds left.

The Spartans outscored the Stormy Petrels 44-23 in the second half on 38 percent shooting, including 50 percent beyond the 3-point line. The Petrels shot just 18 percent for the half. York outrebounded them 30-20 for the period, and outscored them 16-2 in the paint, 10-4 off turnovers, 7-2 in second-chance points and 32-15 off the bench.

For the game, York shot 38 percent to Oglethorpe's 23, including 39 percent from 3-point range to the home side's 14. The Spartans outrebounded the Petrels 50-37 and outscored them 22-8 in the paint, 16-8 off turnovers, 9-2 in second-chance points and 10-2 on the fast break.

Freshman guard Ciara Hughes was named to the All-Classic team after her 16-point game Sunday against Rust. She scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds against York. Bentley finished with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.

The loss drops the Petrels to 3-9 on the season. They'll now move into SAA play with the start of the bulk of the conference season next Friday, Jan. 10. They'll travel to Conway, Ark., to take on Hendrix at 7 p.m. Eastern before swinging through Memphis, Tenn., to play Rhodes Jan. 12.
