LYNCHBURG, VA – A stingy defense propelled the Lynchburg College women's basketball team to a 57-46 victory on New Year's Eve day over visiting Averett University in non-conference play.

The Hornets led 30-18 at intermission, thanks to holding the Cougars to just 3-of-28 shooting from the floor (11%). Lynchburg held a double-figure advantage for nearly all of the second half.

Junior forward Shannon Allan scored a game-high 16 points to go with nine rebounds and six assists. Chaney Forbush was solid in the paint with nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots and Lauren Penley scored seven points with two blocked shots off the bench.

Oneka Jones netted a team-best 11 points for Averett (1-5) and snared a game-high 12 rebounds. Alexis Sollars scored eight points and added six rebounds and four steals.

Allan (1,025) moves into fifth all-time in school history in scoring, jumping Dawn Simmons '97 (1,016) and Kerry Womack '92 (1,022).

The Hornets (5-5) host North Carolina Wesleyan College Friday evening at 7 p.m. in more non-conference action.
