ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick sophomore Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) netted a game- and season-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough as nationally seventh ranked Tufts (9-0) earned a 66-51 victory over Hartwick's women's basketball team on Monday afternoon at Lambros Arena.
The Hawks held a 22-21 lead with eight and a half minutes left in a back and forth opening half, but the Jumbos would score 15 of the final 21 points of the half for a 36-28 edge at the intermission.
The first 20 minutes featured seven lead changes and five tie scores before the late Jumbos' rally. The visitors took an 11-point lead on a three-pointer three minutes into the second half and they would maintain a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Dumas finished the game making 10 of her 17 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. She also grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds. Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) and Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) each scored 10 points for the Hawks.
Both teams came out firing as they each made their first three shots from the field for a 6-6 tie after just two minutes of action. Free throws from Vonasek and a bucket from Dumas gave the Hawks an 11-8 edge two and a half minutes later, but four straight from the Jumbos gave them a one-point lead, 13-12, with six minutes elapsed.
Two straight three-pointers from Dumas would give Hartwick its biggest lead of the game, 20-16, at 12:30 but the Hawks would only manage an Arduini layup over the next seven minutes as Tufts retook the lead for good.
A free throw from Hannah Artner gave the Jumbos a six-point lead, 28-22, before Dumas answered back with a basket to cut the deficit to four. Hannah Foley, however, knocked down one of her four three-pointers on the day to build the advantage back up to seven. She added a layup to increase the margin to nine, 33-24, with under five minutes left.
A pair of free throws from Maria Foglia (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) and a basket from Arduini would trim the Jumbos' lead to six before Hayley Kanner tacked on two from the line for a 36-28 Tufts' lead at halftime.
Dumas was 6-for-11 with two three-pointers for 15 points to go along with seven rebounds in the opening half. Kanner knocked down 12 points for Tufts.
The Jumbos would hold a slim edge on the glass in the first half, 20-19. Tufts, however, would turn nine offensive rebounds into 16 points in the period.
Both teams traded baskets through the opening two minutes of the second half. Another Foley triple with three minutes gone built the Tufts' lead to double figures, 43-32. After Kanner added a layup, Dumas sank a jumper for Hartwick at 14:42 but it would mark the team's last field goal for over five minutes.
The Jumbos led 51-34 with under 10 minutes left until an Arduini layup. Two free throws from Vonasek narrowed the gap to 14 with 7:47 to play, but 11 of the next 15 points from Tufts would extend the advantage to an insurmountable 20 points, 62-42, with under four minutes left. The Hawks would score seven of the final nine points, with Vonasek scoring four and Dumas adding a trey at the horn for the final 66-51 score line.
The Hawks shot 33.9% (19-for-56) from the floor for the game. They hit only 17.6% (3-for-17) from beyond the three-point arc. 'Wick also out-rebounded the Jumbos by a margin of 41-35.
Tufts, which was led by Kanner's 16 points, had four players in double figures. Foley finished with 14, and Ali Berman and Liz Moynihan each scored 10. The Jumbos shot 44.4% (24-for-54) from the field in the contest and made seven three-pointers.
Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) scored five points to go along with six boards and a game-high three steals for Hartwick. Foglia pulled down seven rebounds and tied for a game-high with four assists.
Hartwick (6-2) begins Empire 8 Conference play this Friday night at Lambros Arena against sixteenth ranked Ithaca. The two teams have met in the conference finals in each of the past two seasons.
