LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Elizabeth Messick scored a team-high 14 points and Brittni Walker added 10.
But the Occidental College women's basketball team shot just 3 for 17 from the 3-point line in a 57-51 loss to Southwestern (Tex.) at the D3hoops.com Classic on Sunday.
The Tigers fall to 6-4. Southwestern improves to 3-8.
Messick scored 10 of her points on 5 of 7 shooting in the first half to help Oxy jump out to a 32-26 lead. Southwestern quickly erased Oxy's lead with a 9-2 run to open the second half.
Late in the second, Walker tipped in an offensive rebound with 5:08 left in the game, putting Oxy up 47-43. But Southwestern countered with a 14 of the final 18 points to close out the game.
Michelle Naito-Lo scored eight points and Stefanie Young added six off of the bench for the Tigers. Tiffany Kho had five assists in her second consecutive game starting at point guard.
Jordan Owens led Southwestern with a game-high 23 points.
Oxy plays Messiah on Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. in its last tune-up prior to the bulk of its SCIAC schedule, starting at Cal Lutheran on Jan. 4.
