Middlebury, VT – Junior Christina Marquette became just the seventh player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 56-44, at Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon.
Marquette, who now has 1,003 career points in 62 games played, led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Senior Lillian Jahan added a season-high 12 points and chipped in with five boards, however, she was the only other Yeowoman in double figures.
"This is certainly a great achievement for Christina and our program," Head Coach Kerry Jenkins said. "We of course would have loved to see it happen in a win and I know she feels the same way about that. To reach 1,000 points as a junior is truly special, and she still has a lot of great basketball ahead of her."
The Yeowomen started the game with a 9-2 spurt, but the Panthers eventually settled in to claim a 14-13 cushion with 6:38 left in the half. Marquette scored 11 of Oberlin's 13 points to that point. It would remain nip and tuck for the rest of the half, but Middlebury would take a slim 24-22 advantage into the locker room.
The Panthers opened the second session on a 12-2 run to extend their lead out to 12 at 36-24. Oberlin tried to fight back and got within seven, but unfortunately could not shrink the deficit any further.
Playing for the first time in over three weeks, the signs off the long the layoff appeared at the free throw line and from beyond the arc for the Yeowomen. Oberlin shot just 2-of-14 (14.3%) from 3-point land and was 8-of-15 (53.3%) at the charity stripe, both of which are season lows.
Laura Lowry led the Panthers with 18 points, while Scarlett Kirk contributed 14 of her own off the bench. Middlebury improved to 4-4 with the win.
Oberlin enters it full conference schedule with a record of 5-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. The team will play just its second home game of the season when it welcomes Wooster to town for a 6 p.m. showdown on Friday, January 3.
