Whitewater jumped out ahead early, 6-2 at the 18:57 mark, courtesy of back-to-back 3-pointers from Abbie Reeves but it was all Carthage from then on, as the Lady Reds roared to a 38-16 lead. Then, after the Warhawks went on a 17-1 run late in the first half, Carthage scored the final eight points to go to the locker room with a 47-33 advantage.
The Lady Reds posted 50 points in the paint in the game, compared to 18 for the Warhawks, and had a 45-35 advantage on the glass. UW-W scored 17 points off of 13 turnovers in the contest.
UW-W shot 38% from the field (11-29) compared to 51% for
Carthage (19-37). Reeves was perfect, 5-5, from long range to lead
all scorers at the break with 15 points and matched the first half
high with four rebounds.
The Warhawks whittled the Carthage lead down to eight, 67-59
with 7:44 left after Reeves dropped in two free throws but that was
as close as Whitewater would get. Trailing late in the game the
Warhawks were forced to foul leading to the final 91-77.
UW-W finished the game shooting 38% from the field adding
9-20 from downtown. Carthage shot 52% from the floor and were 7-15
from three point range.
Reeves led all players with 22 points including 6-9 for
three's and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Mary
Merg posted 15 with five boards
and Chelsea
Gieseke joined in double figure scoring with
11. Carthage had five players in double digits led by Michelle
Wenzel's 20 points and eight rebounds.
The Warhawks will wrap up play in the D3hoops.com Classic
with a game against Ohio Northern Monday at 4 p.m. CT.
