Allowing a three-point sharpshooter to find a rhyme can place all sorts of added pressure on a basketball's team defense

Unfortunately for the Potsdam women's basketball team, senior guard Sasha Borenstein (Agoura Hills, Calif. / Agoura Hills) found that zone and kept on shooting to hit 9-of-16 shots with 8-of-15 coming from downtown to drop a season-best 26 points as William Smith College defeated the Bears 91-66 in the final game for Potsdam in the Daytona Beach Shootout Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center.

Potsdam (3-6) trailed 50-30 at the break as the Herons (5-2) shot a blistering 67 percent from the floor in the first half.  William Smith cooled down in the second half as the Bears tightened up their defense to allow just 42 percent shooting and played it out much more even. 

Junior guard Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y. / Indian Lake) received her first start of the season and scored 14 points, snared four rebounds and collected a steal in 24 minutes of action.

Three other players reached double digit in scoring for the Bears as Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y. / Williamsville East), Chenice Russell (Moira, N.Y. / Brushton-Moira) and Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y. / Webster-Schroeder) scored 11 points apiece. 

Kouzan continued to shoot the ball well by hitting 4-of-8 shots from the field.  She remains a highly efficient shooter having made at least half of her shot attempts in six of nine games this season.  Kouzan is shooting 48 percent from the field with a 45.9 percent clip from 3-point range. 

Weigel led the team in rebounds with seven and also dished out three assists and came up with a steal.   Russell also spread it around with six boards, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot. 

The Bears were again beaten down low by being outscored 32-12 in the paint and were outrebounded by a margin of 10. 

Potsdam will enjoy a holiday break now until it resumes play on Jan. 10 when it will host the College at Brockport in its SUNYAC home opener.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.  Potsdam is 1-1 in conference play.
