More news about: Babson

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Senior Kala Crawford (Middle Falls, N.Y.) scored a game-high 17 points and junior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead hoop with 1:46 remaining as Buffalo State College scored the final nine points of the game to defeat Babson College, 64-58, in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

The victory snapped a two-game skid for Buffalo State, which is now 6-2 on the year, while Babson, which has dropped two straight games, falls to 2-7 overall.

Sophomores Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) and Kristen Ferola (Amherst, Mass.) each scored 11 points to lead the Beavers. Classmate Briana Hunt (Newton, Mass.) added eight points, while sophomore Marissa Cicchetti (Mansfield, Mass.) and first-year Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) each chipped in with seven points apiece. Narlee also tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds.

Senior Bianca Smiley (Amherst, N.Y.) had 11 points and eight boards, while classmate Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Bengals. McElroy also notched a game-high four steals in the win.

Ferola and Graber scored Babson's first nine points of the game to take an early 9-6 edge, but Buffalo State ripped off a 13-0 run, sparked by eight points from sophomore Mariah Norris (Endicott, N.Y.), to go ahead 19-9 at the midway point of the half. Trailing 27-17 with 3:01 left before halftime, the Beavers closed with a 9-3 spurt, capped by a layup from Ferola, to pull within 30-26 at the break.

McElroy pushed the Bengals lead back to six with a pair of free throws just 1:15 into the second half, but Babson again responded, this time with a 10-3 run, to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game, 36-35, at the 14:49 mark. Buffalo State regained the lead two possessions later, and went up by as many as five at 50-45 before five straight points from Narlee helped the Green and White pull even with 7:17 remaining.

The Bengals went back in front 55-52 on a layup by Crawford with 4:38 to go, but junior Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass.) sandwiched a pair of hoops around a bucket by sophomore Jess Coelho(Westport, Conn.) to help the Beavers go up 58-55, matching their biggest lead of the game, with 2:42 left.

McElroy helped Buffalo State get within 58-57 after knocking down two free throws one possession late, and Wallace made just her second field goal of the game on the Bengals next trip to go ahead 59-58. Following a missed three-pointer by Roche, Crawford knocked down a jumper to make it 61-58 with 1:09 left. Three different players then buried late free throws to help seal the Buffalo State victory.

The Beavers shot 39 percent (23-for-59) from the floor and held a 26-16 edge on points in the paint. The Bengals shot just 32.8 percent (21-for-64) on the afternoon, but held a 42-40 advantage on the glass and scored 26 points off 27 Green and White turnovers.

Babson returns to action with a 1 p.m. tipoff at Emerson College on Saturday, January 4, while Buffalo State is off until January 10, when it travels to Cortland State for a 6 p.m. tilt.
