Shannon Allan Joins 1,000-point Club, but #19 CNU Escapes with 75-70 OT Win
LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior forward Shannon Allan became just the seventh Lynchburg College women's basketball player to join the 1,000-point club Sunday afternoon, but #19 Christopher Newport University escaped with a 75-70 overtime victory over the Hornets.
Allan, who came into the game with 989 points, netted her 12th-point of the game with a 15-foot jumper from the elbow with 1:26 left in the first half.
LC led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Captains chipped away to tie the game at 34 entering intermission. Both teams had second-half leads, and the Hornets took control 63-56 with 6:52 on the game clock. An 8-1 CNU run tied the game for the fifth time at 64-64 with 4:26 remaining. Chaney Forbush and Allan both hit two pointers to give LC a four-point edge with under two minutes to play, but back-to-back Captain hoops tied the game at 68-68 and neither team could score before the end of regulation. Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell each finished layups to quickly push Christopher Newport up four in the extra session and the Captains limited LC to only a pair of free throws in the five-minute overtime period to claim the victory.
Allan drilled 10-of-20 field goals to finish with a team-high 20 points, and also added seven rebounds and three steals. Forbush posted 13 points and nine caroms while Jaimie Grace contributed 11 points. Ann Dorris tallied eight points and three assists and Sammi Goldsmith added five points and six rebounds. Allan and Forbush each blocked two shots.
Mitchell and Perry both finished with double-doubles for CNU (6-2). Mitchell posted 25 points and 10 rebounds with six steals while Perry had 21 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals. Kendra Stone and Andrea Hobbs each snared nine rebounds and five points. The Captain pressure forced 27 Hornet turnovers.
Allan now has 1,009 points in her two and a half seasons. Current LC softball coach Dawn Simmons '97 (1,016) and Kerry Womack '92 (1,026) are all that stands between Allan and fifth place in her young career.
The Hornets (4-5) are back in action on New Year's Eve day, December 31 at 4 p.m., hosting Averett University.
