With the win, Southern Maine stands at 6-3 overall. The Vikings, suffering their third loss in their last four games, fall to 4-6.
Hasson was 4-for-5 in eight minutes off of the bench to lead the Huskies in both scoring and rebounding as 11 players figured in the scoring for USM. Callender was 4-for-6 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range to finish as the only other Husky in double-figures. Sophomore forward Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) added eight points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior guard Taylor Flood (Sanford, Maine) tossed in eight points to go along with six rebounds. Freshman Jordan Knowlton (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills) added six points and five rebounds.
Narrowly leading the Vikings 16-15 with 8:44 on the clock, Southern Maine outscored Salem State 14-3 to close out the half and take a solid 30-18 lead at the break. A three from Salem State's Jess Kuzmickas pulled the Vikings to within a point of USM, before Hasson scored the next seven points of the game unanswered for a 23-15 Husky lead with 3:48 to play. A three from Viking Ashley White broke up the Huskies run, making it 23-18, but USM scored the final seven points of the half, capped by a three from Callender, for the 12-point halftime advantage.
The Vikings opened the second stanza with one of two free throws from Rachel Carter, before its offense went silent over the next 10 minutes as the Huskies' pounced for 23 unanswered points. Flood followed Carter's free throw with back-to-back three-pointers, while Pelletier hit the offensive glass for a pair of layups for a quick 21-point, 40-19, lead with 15:59 to play.
A three from junior Stephanie Gallagher (York, Maine) and from Knowlton bookended the Huskies' next 12 points for a commanding 52-19 lead with 9:57 remaining. With a solid lead in hand, USM cruised to the win as the Vikings never got any closer than 28 points the rest of the way.
The Huskies return to action at the Scottsdale Shootout in Scottsdale, Arizona. Southern Maine will face Concordia Chicago on Sunday, December 29 (6:00 p.m.). Salem State will hosts its Holiday Classic on the same date (4:00 p.m.) and will face Skidmore College.
