Warhawk Women Top Pointers in Battle of Ranked Teams

The game started off on a back and forth ride with the teams trading small runs until the Warhawks were able to grab a six point led, 26-20 at the 11:02 mark. The Pointers responded with a 14-1 run to flip the score in the favor 34-27 with 7:32 remaining in the half. UW-W whittled the lead down and took the lead with 27 seconds left on the clock with Reilly Stewart (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North) nailing two free throws to make the score 42-41 for the final points of the half. 

The lead changed hands 11 times in the half. UW-SP shot 60% from long range in the first half making 6-10 and were over 50% from the field making 17-32 compared to Whitewater's 4-6 from downtown and 13-26 from the field. UW-W used the free throw line to combat the hot hands of the Pointer shooters making 12-16 in the first twenty minutes. 

Stevens Point regained the lead out of the gate in the second twenty minutes and held the advantage until Kaitlyn Thill (Belgium/Ozaukee)drained a three-pointer off a set inbounds play to knot the score 62-62 with 10:23 showing on the clock. UW-SP answered with a bucket on their end of the court but Thill responded with her second three in less than a minute giving UW-W lead back, 65-64, at 9:26 to jump start the Warhawk offense. It was all Whitewater the rest of the way. A 7-0 run made the score 69-64 at the 5:38 mark. UW-SP would score just five points the rest of the game compared to UW-W's 11. 

The Warhawks allowed just two three pointers in the second half with Point totaling 8-14, 57%, from behind the arc. UW-W was an efficient 7-11, 64% from downtown in the game. The game was won at the charity stripe. Whitewater was 21-32 compared to 3-11 for UW-SP. 

Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) tallied a double-double leading all players with 17 points and ten boards, all off the defensive glass. Thill added 16 points including 3-3 from three-point range adding four steals. Stewart was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line and went 3-5 from the field for 12 points. Katie Burton (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake Sourth) posted 11 in the game. Leading UW-SP was Kaitlyn Jacobs with 15 points and eight rebounds. 

The Warhawks head to Las Vegas for the D3hoops Classic at the end of December. UW-W will take on Carthage December 29 at 2:00 and face Ohio Northern the 30th at 4:00.
