Southern Maine Pounds Western Connecticut 67-31

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine/McAuley) scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds – both game-high totals – as the University of Southern Maine Huskies soundly defeated the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 67-31 in a Little East Conference women's basketball tilt Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.

With the win, Southern Maine ups its record to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Little East. Western Connecticut falls to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Knight was efficient from the field making 7-for-10 from the floor in just 16 minutes of playing time. Senior guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) drained four three-pointers for 12 points in 21 minutes.  Sophomore Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) had a season-high seven rebounds, helping USM to a commanding 56-30 edge on the boards.  Pelletier added four points, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal. Senior forward Hannah Fenwick (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) also helped the Huskies' in the paint grabbing eight rebounds to compliment four points, two assists, two blocked shots and three steals.

Western Connecticut senior Sciarra Brandt (Thomaston, Conn.) led the Colonials with nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Junior guard Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) added seven points and four rebounds. 

With a modest 8-5 lead with 13:39 showing on the clock, the Huskies rattled off an imposing 19-1 run over the next 10 minutes to lead 27-6 with 3:56 on the clock.  Five different players scored in the run for the Huskies led by junior forward Abby Hasson (South Portland, Maine).  Hasson scored all seven of her points in the Huskies' pivotal run, while Knight scored five. With just one free throw during the Huskies' offensive outburst, the Colonials were able to score the final five points of the half to trail 27-12 at the break.

The Huskies continued to roll in the second half. Pelletier fed Knight for the Huskies' first points of the second half and Brandt countered with a layup for the Colonials, but Knight sandwiched a pair of layups around a three from McNamara for 36-14 USM lead with 17:19 to play. A Colonial three made it 36-17 with 17:01 to play, but USM countered with a 15-1 run capped by back-to-back threes from McNamara for a commanding 51-18 lead with 10:29 to play. From there, the Huskies never led by less than 31 points and had a 38 point advantage late in the game prior to the 67-31 final.

Southern Maine travels to Salem State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.  Western Connecticut travels to Regis (Mass.) on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
